Japanese hand painted tea set Gemchina

By summerjoy76, 15 November, 2008
Description

i found this description of the same set on another website, "Japanese tea set. It was made in Satsuma, a province in the southern part of Kyushu. The decoration is Kyoto-style, meaning it was made in a workshop in one of the busy trade centers such as Kyoto, Yokohama, or Osaka, for export to the West. The set was made about 1930. The raised-dot designs are called moriage; the images of a lady appearing in the bottom of the cups are called halophanes. Both these features are typical of 20th century Satsuma pottery. Earlier 19th century pieces are decorated in delicately drawn, exquisite detail on a finely crackled surface. Later on, as foreign demand for this pottery increased, the decoration became bolder, darker, and more abstract."
