Description
1795 Josef Klotz Violin with 2 Bows. There was an appraisal from 1980 in case with a $12,000 valuation plus $800 per bow. Bows need rehaired and violin is 3/4 size... we believe. It has the Klotz label inside and overall good condition.
Re: 1795 Josef Klotz Violin
An easy way to somewhat narrow it down is to check how the label was written. Most labels made for instruments in the late 1700's were hand written while labels made for copies, especially copies in the late 1800's and early 1900's were printed or typed. This isn't a fool proof method but it does give you a fast check if the label looks typewritten it almost assuredly wasn't made in the 1700's.
My suggestion though to get the best answer is to go to a local violin shop (not a music store) and have the luthier take a look at it. They can give you (almost always for free) a good idea as to actual age and authenticity along with the quality of the workmanship::::: I try and look at something and see if it's been faked or a Repro. ANYTHING that makes it look real... Anything that makes it look to good to be that old.. I have spent a few hours looking for something wrong with yours............. " PLEASE NOTE" In no way am I saying I'm and Expert.
I suggest you take this to a Hands on person! Also give the guys here a shot at this, pay for the Appraisal..
Good Luck let me know what you find out.. Thanks.
