I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me date and approximate the value of this Indian Tulwar Sword. I bought a storage locker and found this inside. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.
In India like many foriegn countries Export laws came into play to prevent items of cultural importance leaving the country During the 1970's - 1980's. Once this happened many antique pieces were cleaned and enhanced to give them a modern appearance and put through customs as reproductions..
An original Tulwar Sword Scabbard was made of wood and covered in cloth. As a result many did not survive over time. The INDIA stamp was done to make it easier for tourist to leave the country with them going through customs.
I believe this piece was made for the tourist trade. To validate the stamp India would indicate its a later period piece. If you look at the 18 - 19th century versions they did not have a blood letting groove as your piece has nor India stamped on the handle.
Est Cica 1970's Origin India - Tourist Market Vintage Indian Ornate Tulwar Sword with Openwork Scabbard,
Est Value: $150 - $250 US pending on market and demand. I would insure it under your house contents insurance for $300 - $400 US replacement cost.
Could you please leave me feedback in a reply to this valuation. Thanks kindly ...
I would imagine you can dice a mean salad with this blade : )
Peace Always
