Description
Found almost identical pic online from an upholsterer that said chair was hand carved from 1890's as marked on wood frame. This chair appears to have jute webbing and I see moss & cotton batting from underside. Was reupholstered in the 1970's. Upholstery is still in great condition. Not sure if wood has been refinished. Wood finish is worn on nose of dogs but wood itself is in good condition. Chair is sturdy and comfortable.

Re: 1890's Hand Carved Dog Head Arm Chair
Hello, have you learned anything about the value of this chair, perhaps outside of this site? Thanks...
Re: 1890's Hand Carved Dog Head Arm Chair
I have two of these chairs and a footrest. I got them from my grandfather when he passed. Just curious if anyone has any of the value.
Re: 1890's Hand Carved Dog Head Arm Chair
Would love to have this! What a beauty!
Re: 1890's Hand Carved Dog Head Arm Chair
At the death of my husband's grandmother, there was a "fight" over this chair, matching ottoman and matching hat rack. He is not a fighter and has always missed this chair. Are you willing to sell it?

Re: 1890's Hand Carved Dog Head Arm Chair
I have a chair similar to this-- it also has an attached footrest. It was reupholstered in the 1980s but the original upholstery was not removed.. I am interested in selling it.
Re: 1890's Hand Carved Dog Head Arm Chair
Hi. Do you have pictures I can see of your chair? I just bought one from NY and would like to have a mate to it. Let me know how much you are asking for it as well. [email protected]
Thanks,
John
Re: 1890's Hand Carved Dog Head Arm Chair
Dear Mrs. Bond,
Did you ever find a new dog chair for your husband? I have one too that I'm willing to sell. Excellent condition. I rebuilt the springs so it's like new. My wood and dog heads I believe are in better condition then the photos shown.
If you're still on the hunt - let me know. I live in Twin Cities - not sure if that is a problem.

Hello R.J.
Is your chair still available?

Thank you
Re: 1890's Hand Carved Dog Head Arm Chair
Yes, my chair is still available. My email address is [email protected]. I live in Twin Cities. It needs re-upholstering but the chair itself is in excellent condition.I had the chair part rebuilt so it's very sturdy. The rest of the wood carving in very good condition.

Re: 1890's Hand Carved Dog Head Arm Chair
The Hotel de Paris Museum in Georgetown, CO has four of these chairs in its collection. The Chairs were originally made by Joseph Zangerle, Chicago.
Re: 1890's Hand Carved Dog Head Arm Chair
I have one too. According to family lore, the chair traveled west from Macungie PA to Emporia KS with my great grandfather in the mid 1800's, so is earlier than the 1890 estimate (though I have seen it in the Zangerle ads) . My parents found it in mom's grandfather's barn, seat and back rotten, and had it rebuilt, so the seat and back are not authentic. I inherited it from my parents and would LOVE to have a mate for it.
I also was once told by a decorative arts appraiser that there was a record of a set of dog head chairs having been bought or ordered for the US Senate at some point. I know no more about that but I might be able to track it down.
Re: 1890's Hand Carved Dog Head Arm Chair
I would NOT sell mine under any circumstances, but WOULD buy another, and/or matching footstool.
Dogs head chair for sale - write for photos!
I have inherited my grandmother's dogs head chair, Student Chair No. 3, from Joseph Zangerle. It is is very good condition and is for sale.
I can't seem to figure out how to attach photos. The ones appearing under my post are not my chair.
I'm in Denver.
