Antique/Vintage Doll

Profile picture for user Donnetta Mack

Description

I have an antique doll that was handed down to me by my sister, who passed away a couple years ago.  I didn't even know she had it, so I don't have any information on it.  It appears to be very old.  The body is soft with hard head, hands, and feet.  When the doll is tilted, her eyes roll up and down.  Her clothes appear to be homemade.  She has molding seams on her head, starting from one ear, over the top of her head, and down to the other ear.  She also has seams down the sides of her legs and feet. Her clothing has some wholes, possibly from moths.  It appears that her lipstick is handpainted.

I would love to know the story behind this beautiful antique doll, and maybe give it a home to someone who collects them.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Re: Antique/Vintage Doll

Your doll is what is commonly called a "Mama Doll" made between 1930-40's. Most of these had a squeaker in the center of their torso that made a sound as if it were saying mama when tipped forward and backward. With the exception of the clothing it appears to be original, meaning no parts have been replaced. The head, arms and legs are composition material. Being in poor condition it does not carry much value. Someone who collects composition dolls may very well be interested in owning it.
