Antique “Lion Head” Rocker – Hand-Carved Mahogany - Mid 1800’s - Early 1900’s

By smilonface, 15 October, 2016
Description

Trying to find more information about the following:

This hand-carved wood rocking chair belonged to my grandmother and has been in our home for nearly 50 years.  It is made of mahogany and has beautifully carved spindles, details & lion's head arm rests.  Measures:  22" Wide x 20" Deep x 32 1/2" High.  It is put together by pegs (at the top anyway).  There are no maker marks on the piece that I can see.  Collectors/experts from antique indentification sights suggest it is from the 1840-1850 era while others say it could be from 1900-1910.  Possible makers are Homer, stomps-Burkhardt, Jelliff and Morris Cook.  Estimated value could be from $450 to $2K.

Re: Antique “Lion Head” Rocker – Hand-Carved Mahogany - Mid...

It's an Empire Revival piece made 1890-1910. The style is not currently popular, it last peaked in the 1980's. We'd have a hard time selling a comparable for over $375.00 these days.
