Description
Flask includes screw cap. On the bottom of the flask starting from the top down... these are the markings. From left to right... (3 symbols) as follows.... an x inside a square, next a symbol that looks somewhat like an ampersand, then what looks like a dagger inside a square. Below that is an anchor with line, below that is a crown, below that is D.S.CO and below that is 1852
Re: Silver flask 1852
Wel, if it was just a Gorham or similar...maybe, $600. But, if it is a rare Derby Silver Co, could be thousands. This appraisal biz is tricky. http://www.tias.com/11001/PictPage/1923052941.html
Re: Silver flask 1852
On the bottom of the flask is the marking D.S. CO. Does this mean that it is Derby Silver CO??
Re: Silver flask 1852
it probably is, but since everyone worries about fakes & reproductions...that is why I suggested an actual appraisal.
Re: Silver flask 1852
I took it to a few antique shops and the consensus was that it is silver plate... not sterling and worth maybe $75... what a bummer. Thanks for your input though.
Re: Silver flask 1852
Hallmarks are most often found on precious metal objects. I would not trust most antique shops/dealers...many only want to pay pennies on the dollar & are not necessarily expert appraisers. The anchor & crown are British silver hallmarks & DS CO was Derby Co's maker mark ...you would not expect to find these on silver plate. You really should find a local auction house & have their silver appraiser look at it, for inclusion in their next specialist auction. Maybe, before you have to pay they can tell you if it would be worth doing so, 1st. Even old silver plate can be valuable. http://www.shop4silver.co.uk/hallmark.htm

for more research, since there are indeed fakes...
