Martin Holmes Sculptures

Category
Fine Art
Condition
Excellent
Description

Hi, This is one of several beautiful sculptures by an artist named J. Martin Holmes. I thank you in advance for taking a moment to look at the piece. Mr. Holmes passed away in, I believe 2011. His works are being sold at an estate sale this weekend. I and my brother will be purchasing the lot. I am seeking assistance in identifying the artist and getting an honest opinion of the viability of his work as an investment. I am including several photos of each piece. I apologize for the setting and quality of lighting. I was forced to take the photos in the garage at the artists home.  Unfortunately, I know little about Mr. Holmes. Internet searches yielded almost no useful information, save the following reference to the sale of one of his bronze sculptures:  http://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/more-furniture-collectibles/sculptures… I would appreciate your opinion. I'm hoping that the craftsmanship of these works might have some appeal to collectors. Any advice you may offer would be much appreciated. Thank you, Jim

Stone 9 dragon sculpture.

Category
Asian Art
Condition
Excellent
Description

I need help identifying this object's stone and value. I purchased at the Scott Antique Mart in Atlanta, Ga. a few years back. What I know... it's a Chinese Emporer's Seal either red jade or Shoushon stone. It weighs 35 pounds and is cold to the touch, it's 9" high by 6" square. It has been inked and used. It's translucent like the pics of red jade I've seen but not milky like the Shoushon stone I've seen. It's carved out of one piece of stone by a very skilled detailed artist, has deep undercuts and a gold engraved signature on the tongue of the largest dragon of 9 dragons. Any geologists out there? Any Chinese artifact experts? I have no history of the statue at all, and the man I bought it from had no clue what it was either.

Help! :)
