Dining Room Table

Category
American Furniture
Condition
Fair
Description

This dining room set has been in my family for over 65 yrs. Unfortunately we are moving and our new home has no place for such a table so we must let it go. It measures 60" x 40" when fully closed. It has two 15" leaves that fold up and store inside table when not needed giving a total length of 90" when expanded. The top does need to be refinished as we have had a couple mishaps over the years from having younger children in the home. Thanks for looking. Originally sold by Angelus Furniture Mfg Company in LA, California

This is a e-mail I recieved from the Manufacture yesterday.

Todd,

The set you have is a Duncan Phyfe style made of mahogany and finished in a traditional mahogany finish.  The table features two folding self storage extensions, which Angelus applied for a patent on in 1927 and was granted that patent in 1931.  During World War II Angelus made gliders for the Army so we stopped production on most of the bedroom and dining sets we were manufacturing to concentrate on the war effort.  Production of those casegoods resumed in early 1945 and continued until the mid 1960's, which is when Angelus started making only upholstered furniture.  Based on the tag photo you sent I would say your set was manufactured some time between 1948 and 1952. The logo on the tag, the four digit phone number and two digit zip code tie in with that time period.  Angelus was not open to the public at that time and you either had to be a dealer, or be referred by one in order to buy from us.  The customer name on the tag is "Ratto & Crandall", which was most likely the store or dealer that made the purchase.  Sorry I am unable to provide more information, but this should give you a start.  We always like to hear from people who value fine furniture and the memories that are created enjoying those items.

Thank You,

Tom Sorge
