Am trying to uncover more of the history of this painting. From what I have so far, the artist is believed to be Francesco Penni, a student of Raphael. There is writing on the back of the frame, tracking the ownership of the painting back to 1802. Here is the address to a web page where I have posted many photos of the piece:

Green wicker over slats, tin lined. Removable ice compartment inside. Canvas straps to secure the top. Wooden top with centered hinges, wooden bottom, wooden ahndles. The Hawkeye mark (stencil?) is on the lid. There are a couple of dings in the wicker, one side is almost totally intact, a spot with a single srand of wicker approx. 1" in length missing, the other side 4 strand spot of about the same length missing. In all, a very nice basket that could still be used as a functional picnic basket.

I received this about 10 years ago. I believe my grandfather replaced some of the dowels that hold the shelves up with screws. The left side of the hutch glass must have been broken because it has been replaced with a flexible plastic that has been there since I was a small child. I have not painted, fixed or replaced anything. It still smells of old wood. The back of the mirrors you can tell they must have been hand chisled and are held in with small pieces of wood. I am interested to learn the history of this piece, what it might be worth and if I should refinish/replace anything to increase the value.

Any ideas? Don't know much about this piece except it depicts a Qing court scene. I was told it was from the late 19th Century.

This is the largest and most detailed clam shell scene I have ever seen in person or in a museum. The detailed scenery goes back five layers inside the shell. Purchased at a local estate sale.
