You would roll the device on your face I think hopefully creating some static electricity and create a spark. What can I say...it was sold in the 1890's. There was a lot of buzz about electricity. This item sat in my parents attic for years. I found it when I was a teen and thought it was pretty cool. I also found an ancient sun lamp and that is another story. (Turned out bad).
