Description
Tinned copper bowl with Hebrew inscription and 12 medallions representing 12 tribes of Israel. 4 characters with dots between them may be a date or signature. Inscription translates to the steps of Seder including Kadesh, Karpas, Urchatz and Maror. Hand engraved. There is a Hebrew character missing from the inscription, and the names of Simeon and Reuben have been swapped (Simeon is usually represented by a building). Plus Levi is represented by a grapevine, not an ephod, which is unusual. No provenance, from a dealer in South Africa.
I apologize that I don't…
I apologize that I don't know what it's worth, but I have to comment on how beautiful and unusual this seder bowl is. I wonder if one of the professional appraisers can comment on your item? To me it definitely looks hand made and is probably a one-of-a-kind item so may be difficult to get the history or valuation on.
My thoughts exactly!
Thank you, Joseph. Exactly what I think. It is so beautiful - but I am finding it impossible to find out much more about it. Definitely one of a kind. The closest thing I've come across is in a British museum, and much finer craftsmanship, dated 1880. But hte style is very different. I suspect Persian influence.
