This piece depicts an old man sitting on a pile of rocks with his bag of oysters. He stares intently at the beautiful pearl in the palm of his hand. The colors are shade of light tan and blue grays. The band around his cap is navy blue and his pants are a shade lighter. There is a red anchor on his shirt with a chain around it. The delicate detailing is evident in the wrinkles in his clothing, his face and beard, his toes and fingers, and the flesh tones in the skin are amazing. On the backside of the piece is a signature inside a scroll "VoC lol" with an accent over the second "o".
Last Rites kit. Viaticum is the term the Catholic church and some Anglo CatholicAnglicans uses for the Eucharist (Communion) given to a dying person. The word viaticum is a Latin word meaning "provisions for a journey."
This is a kit used by priests who made housecalls to administer last rites. It is mainly made of wood (not sure what kind), with a large crucifix adorned with a silver Christ. It includes the small silver plate, on which the Eucharist is placed, the vial which held holy water/annointing oils, the silver spoon and cloth for applying the water/oil, the Scapula which was placed around the recipient's neck, and two blessed candles in their candelabras. When closed, a picture of the Last Supper is on the front, behind glass.
