I have found a small brass box with an art deco-style design etched on the top. The etching is filled with white. The inside of the box is lined with a red velvet material. On the bottom of the box is a stamped script signature, but it's not quite readable. It looks like L____ Sp_____ with both the first and last name ending in a 'tall' letter like a d or l. I would like to find out anything I can about who this maker might be, when the item may have been produced, and what it's original use was since I would not think a pillbox would be padded.
I think that this piece, although damaged (see detail of handle and spout), and repaired, is gorgeous. I have exhausted every other (free) resource and have had no luck finding out exactly what I have here. I normally don't pay $50 for something I can't identify, but I had a good feeling about this and really liked the piece. I am relatively certain that it is neither Chinese nor Japanese, notwithstanding the clear Oriental influence. I believe it might be English, and I think it might be old. If you have any ideas, I would be greatful to know your thoughts. Thanks in advance to all who help.
