I have a blue and gold jar with a lid on the bottom it says 52/6 with a signature that i cant read. then it has a sticker that says created in italy for rosenthal netter inc. it has a few chips in it but i have had it in storage for years.
I have an old looking basket-shaped item measuring 8 inches wide, 6 inches deep, and 5 inches tall (9 inches tall if you include the handle). The body of the basket is some king of ceramic material, has an ornate floral design, has lots of crazing, and appears to be brown with age (but this could be the way it was made). The very fancy footed base and handle are made of some mystery material that is hard, but seems to have a very low density (almost like paper mache than has been hardened somehow).
I think this may be some kind of bride's basket, but there ar no markings that I can find. I think the base and handle may have been glued to the ceramic basket, but cannot tell for sure.
I bought this item on impulse today at a flea market auction. It wasn't until I got it out into the daylight that I actually saw how good of quality it is. It appears to be copper, wrapped around a steel or iron ring running along the circumference. The craftsmanship is excellent, and the details are very sharp. It also has a wonderful patina.
It has Latin words around the relief potrait, which basically says that this portrays Maurice, Prince of Orange.
There appears to be an artist signature for someone named "A. Arens." (see photo)
My hunch is that this was made in the Netherlands during the Victorian era, but I have no clue. I feel that way because the decorative figures around the edge of the piece seem like something from that era.
I've tried Google, but was not able to come up with any information on the artist, or even find a closely similar piece.
Thank you for looking, and any information is greatly appreciated!
